What's in a name?

Lately we've been talking a lot about names and the meanings because in 10 weeks or so we'll have to name another little boy or a girl.

This got me thinking about my name. I've never been fond of my name. Growing up I always wanted to add an "h" to the end of my name thinking  it would be "way cooler" than the name Maria. Why, you might ask? Well, for starters the meaning of my name is: BITTER, SEA OF BITTERNESS, and REBELLION. Yep, you read correctly.

Secondly, anytime anyone meets me for the first time they give me a look like, "Her name is Maria but she's not Hispanic?" (Kinda like the Donna Chang episode off of Seinfeld! Remember that episode? If not, then here's the clip to remind you!) :)

Lastly, I love The Sound of Music, but over the years many people have ruined  a certain song for me. Do you know how often people sing me this song?

She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee
Her dress has got a tear
She waltzes on her way to Mass
And whistles on the stair
And underneath her wimple
She has curlers in her hair
I even heard her singing in the abbey

She's always late for chapel
But her penitence is real
She's always late for everything
Except for every meal
I hate to have to say it
But I very firmly feel
Maria's not an asset to the abbey

I'd like to say a word in her behalf
Maria makes me laugh

How do you solve a problem like Maria?

How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
A flibbertijibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!

Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her stay
And listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon the sand

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

When I'm with her I'm confused
Out of focus and bemused
And I never know exactly where I am
Unpredictable as weather
She's as flighty as a feather
She's a darling! She's a demon! She's a lamb!

She'd outpester any pest
Drive a hornet from its nest
She could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl
She is gentle! She is wild!
She's a riddle! She's a child!
She's a headache! She's an angel!
She's a girl!

How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
A flibbertijibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!

Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her stay
And listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon the sand

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

However, after doing a bit more research on my name I found out that the name Maria....

  • Became popular with the spread of Christianity as a Latinized form of the Hebrew name of Jesus' mother Mary (Miriam in Hebrew).
  • Maria ranked seventh out of 4,275 for females of all ages in the 1990 U.S. Census.
  • Because of its enduring popularity, the name is used extensively in society and media throughout the world.
  • This was the name of two ruling queens of Portugal. It was also borne by the Habsburg queen Maria Theresa (1717-1780), whose inheritance of the domains of her father, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, began the War of the Austrian Succession.
  • Maria has 17 variant forms: Maree, Mariah, Marialena, Marialinda, Marialisa, Marie, Marieanne, Marielena, Marietta, Mariette, Marika, Marja, Marya, Mayra, Mayria, Moraiah and Moriah.
  •  There have been 25 songs written using the name Maria.
